Brewing a Breastfeeding Controversy

From the moment I knew I was pregnant, I knew that I was going to breastfeed. I knew that it was the best choice for my son. However, despite my research, I did not anticipate the problems or challenges that I faced. I was not alone, as so many mothers out there had even worse barriers to overcome than me. I kept reading books and tried to find answers online. I went to lactation consultants. I spoke with other moms. Breastfeeding got easier, but I think that it was due to time and my persistence. Unfortunately, some moms do not have the support or access to resources that I did. Bonnie Modugno, MS, RD, CLE, is a registered dietitian in private practice in Santa Monica. She brings up important points about the disparity in support for nursing moms and why some don't succeed. Bonnie works extensively with individuals and families addressing nutrition concerns throughout the lifecycle, with a special focus on maternal, infant and child nutrition. She is a certified lactation educator. Bonnie recently contributed to Smart Bites for Baby by Mika Shino. She can be reached through her website www.muchmorethanfood.com.

Breastfeeding Birth Plan

This is Part 2 of Lara's breastfeeding birth plan guest post (here is Part 1). Below is a checklist she's prepared for your convenience. This is a great list to start and tailor to your needs. Feel free to leave a comment with questions or email her at info@mamapeardesigns.com.

The Necessity of a Breastfeeding Birth Plan

As my husband and I eagerly awaited the arrival of Big B, we went to classes and read books to prepare. We also talked about a birth plan with my obstetrician and what we wanted to have done. However, we never thought about a breastfeeding birth plan. I knew that I wanted to breastfeed and I thought that was all to it. Lara Audelo is a Certified Lactation Education Counselor and owner of Mama Pear Designs. Below is an excerpt of her article on the importance of a breastfeeding birth plan. You can also check out her check list on Part 2.

DRIA Cover Review (LLN2012 Sponsor Spotlight)

Photobucket
Breastfeeding in public is something that I was definitely shy to do initially. Big B did not like drinking out of the bottle so I pretty much was his nutrition source for a while. I had tried baby blankets and a pashmina to cover myself up while nursing, but neither one of us were comfortable. It wasn't until I had discovered nursing covers that I truly felt comfortable breastfeeding while out-and-about.

More Milk Plus Review & Sponsor Spotlight (Let Love Nourish 2012)

Photobucket
As a first-time mom, I had my challenges. None of them made me feel so guilty and inadequate as having a low milk supply. I was so stressed about not having enough milk to give Big B that it was causing me to not produce milk...you know, it was a catch 22. Of course, there were other breastfeeding issues, but those I could not control, or felt like it was something I can change. Breastfeeding the second-time around was definitely easier and more enjoyable. I felt like I was armed with more information, experience, and quite honestly, the right products.

Easy Bra Review & Sponsor Spotlight (Let Love Nourish 2012)

Photobucket
While I was pregnant with Big B, I read several books on breastfeeding. While I did research on the hows and problem solving, the one thing I didn't look into was intimate apparel. It just seemed like they were all the same, provide access to the breast to feed the baby. Well, my eyes were certainly opened after I was already in the thick of it. Now, I definitely know that not all nursing bras are made equal.

Leading Lady Nursing Cami/Tank (LLN 2012 Sponsor Spotlight)

Photobucket Prior to my pregnancy with Big B, I had no idea that maternity and nursing bras existed. Now, I am so thankful for them. I began wearing a maternity bra as early as my 6th week during the first trimester. It wasn't because I was outgrowing my pre-pregnancy bras, it was just because anything too tight made me nauseous. I had no idea where to buy them or the correct fit. Today, after all my research, I am now well versed with nursing intimate apparel.

Milkmakers Cookies (LLN 2012 Sponsor Spotlight)

Photobucket My first experience with breastfeeding was definitely not a positive one. My milk came late, Big B had latch problems, and I had supply issues. Eventually, everything worked out. Although I drank tea to help increase my supply, I was never sure how effective it was. Long after I stopped breastfeeding, I found ways to help increase breastmilk production. Although it was a little too late for me then, I want to make sure that new moms (and veteran moms) know that there are delicious and effective ways of helping boost milk supply.

Goddess Nightie Review (Let Love Nourish 2012)

Photobucket
Breastfeeding products abound. My mom has told me time and again that when she was nursing us, she did not have nearly as many products on the market to help her out. Things were definitely simpler then and so were the choices. Today, there are many stores, brick and mortar as well as online, to help breastfeeding moms. From products to information to support, retailers have become a go-to resource for nursing moms.

Breastfeeding Post Around the Blogosphere (Let Love Nourish 2012)

August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month. Let Love Nourish 2012 is a platform for bloggers to share their stories with moms and dads. My goal is to increase awareness for breastfeeding, encourage those on the fence about breastfeeding, support parents who are struggling, and let moms know that they are not alone. I've had my own struggles with breastfeeding and found testimonies and stories from other moms helpful with the process.

If you have a breastfeeding story that you would like to share, please add the link to your post below. It can be an old or new post. After adding your link, please post the event button on your blog to increase exposure of this event. The more exposure, the more moms we can help and support. In addition, I am hosting a free giveaway hop at the end of the month. Go the the Let Love Nourish 2012 page for more information about the giveaway hop.

Rules for Breastfeeding Post Hop:

  • Add your breastfeeding post to the linky below. Link directly to your breastfeeding post and not to your homepage.
  • Put your blog name in the Name field. Please include the post topic in parenthesis  (i.e general breastfeeding, latching, milk supply, military, etc.). This will help moms look for specific topics they are interested in.

After having supply issues with my son and based on my experience with the pregnant belly oil, I will definitely purchase Motherlove® products for use with the next baby.

About The Nursing Mother's Companion
This was my breastfeeding bible. I've included it in my breastfeeding must-have list. We all have our personal preference for an author's writing style and tone. This book just resonated with me. Unlike other breastfeeding books,  The Nursing Mother's Companion was free of judgement and presented information in a matter-of-fact way. Now in it's 6th edition, the book includes "Survival Guides," has 2 new sections (breast pump and pumping and new growth chart), and an updated appendix. I learned so much about the breast, nursing process, what challenges to expect and how to overcome them, resources available, and the role of others from this book. As a pregnant woman who was intent on breastfeeding my son, I thought this book was very informative, comprehensive, and easy to read. I highly recommend it to anyone considering breastfeeding.
