Teaching my children about our planet and living green is important to me. In addition to being a model of green living, I use books to educate my preschooler about our planet, the organisms thriving on it, and the importance of taking care of it. He loves to read. Every night he always asks for an extra book or two during story time. To celebrate Earth Day, I wanted to focus our reading material on Earth. Thanks to Barefoot Books, I was able to do just that.

While in search for a new work bag for my husband, I steered towards something eco-friendly. His only criterion was that it is a messenger bag. It did not matter to him the brand or material, providing it is functional, durable, and didn't break the bank. For me, if it were made from recycled materials, it was an even better find. I don't remember what keywords I used, but I came across Engage Green®.

I don't remember how I came across soap nuts, perhaps from another eco-friendly blogger or while doing research for washing cloth diapers. I did more research and wanted to try them as they are a natural detergent. I was definitely intrigued. Indigenous to Asia, soapnuts, or soapberry, grow on trees. They apparently have a natural surfactant, called saponin, which foams when added to water. Soap nuts have many uses outside of household cleaning such as insecticide, medicine, and ornaments.

Living a green lifestyle is often a private affair. Whatever we do, we do at home, sometimes at work, but very rarely do we let the world know that we are eco-conscious. We don't walk around with a sign that says "I recycle," well, not me anyway. As much as I believe that actions speak louder than words, I do think a cute graphic tee may be subtle enough to let everyone know that I am an environmentalist. Today, April 23, is National Picnic Day. (Yes, there is such a thing.) As most folks do, we usually bring disposable tableware during picnics. It's more convenient, but not the most eco-friendly way to celebrate family fun time under the sun...at least, not until now. Living a green lifestyle can mean many different things such as the 3 R's (reduce, reuse, recycle). Not too long ago, I heard a 4th R, repurpose. Repurposing is adapting an object for a different purpose. In our house, I've repurposed an old sorting laundry basket into recycling bins. The different colored baskets keep our recyclable separate. In my quest to find companies to feature for Celebrate the Earth, I found BottleHood, an eco-conscious company widely known for their repurposed goods.

We don't do Easter baskets at our house. We do, however, do Easter presents. It's like Christmas presents but during Easter. Say what you will, but I do keep and reuse gift bags and tissue paper that we receive when getting presents - at least the ones that can be reused again. I just feel so guilty throwing away items that can be repurposed or recycled. The same goes for wrapping paper. Did you know that not all wrapping paper can be recycled? Some materials (gold shapes, glitter, plastic) used in making wrapping paper make it non-recyclable because these items can not be recycled. Also, some wrappers are dyed, laminated, or contain very little material that can be recycled; not to mention that they have tape all over them which also can't be recycled. This year, I found a gift wrap retailer that offers guilt-free wrapping paper. What is guilt-free wrapping paper? It's wrapping paper made from recycled materials and can be recycled. Guess what we'll be using to wrap Easter presents in?

Green Toys™ Recycling Truck & School Bus Review (Celebrate the Earth)

We love Green Toys™ and own several toys from this awesome company. I discovered Green Toys three years ago when looking for eco-friendly toys for my son. After my first purchase (tea set), I was hooked. I have included their toys in my son's wish list as well as given them as gifts. These eco-friendly toys are incredibly well made and durable. I love that they are made of recycled milk jugs...we certainly have recycled our fair share of those and it's nice to see them repurposed.

Aurorae® Yoga Classic Mat Review (Celebrate the Earth)

I love practicing yoga and wish I could start taking classes again. Anyone who thinks yoga is just stretching definitely has not taken a class. There really is a connection between body and mind during practice; it's such a holistic approach to health. I found Aurorae® Yoga while in search of an eco-friendly yoga mat, and I am so glad I did.
