Summer Reading Programs 2012

School is out for my son this week. Like many parents, I've been busy filling our calendar with things to do to occupy his time. Although I signed him up for summer camp, that's only a couple of hours a day for 2 weeks. My preschooler loves to be read to and during the summer he can get rewarded for it. Summer reading incentive programs are a great way to keep kids' minds active, engaged, and retain some of the things they learned during the school year. Most summer reading programs are designed to encourage kids to read by giving a prize for completing the program. You can find an incentive program for preschoolers to teens. Below is an updated list of free summer reading programs.



INCENTIVE SUMMER READING PROGRAMS

Barnes and Noble Summer Reading - Kids (1st to 6th grade) read 8 books and record in their Reading Journal. Upon completion of the program, kids will select a book for their prize.
  

Book Adventure by Sylvan Learning - Children (K-8) can select from 8,000 titles to read. Earn points by taking an online quize about the book they read. The prize library includes itms such as temporary tatoos, activity booklets, CD, and more/.

Book It Program by Pizza Hut - K-6 students in the 2011-2012 school year are eligible to win a "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" summer prize package by reading 5 books. After reading the books, students mail in the entry form to enter the sweeps.

Chuck E. Cheese - Kids record their daily reading progress on a 2-week calendar. Once completed, kids can redeem their coupon for 10 free tokens. Food purchase is necessary at participating locations.

Feed Your Brain by Half Price Books - Kids 14 and under keep track of how many minutes they read a day on a reading log; a minimum of 15 minutes per day for a month is required. After reaching 300 minutes, kids turn in their log to receive $5 HPB Back-to-School Bucks. Each month, a top reader from each age group will be selected for a $20 HPB Gift Card.

Scholastic - Kids 12 and under can participate by logging the minutes they read online. After accumulating a certain number of points, kids spin a virtual wheel which determines their prize. A Scholastic Reader Timer application can be downloaded for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and Android to help kids keep their time.

Summer Reading Community Challenge Sweepstakes by iVillage - iVillage has teamed up with PBS Kids and Scholastic for this 6 week program. Kids track their reading progress on a Reading Progress Chart. Parents can enter daily for a chance at winning $1,000 and other prizes (PBS Kids store credit and Kindle Fire).
